This section of the guide isn't going to outline what is available at AEON. The megamall itself has an easy to understand layout, and after strolling through once or twice you will pretty much know where to go to. Apart from the multinationals and megastores, there are also many small specialty shops, plenty of places to eat, drink or rest, and a few barrow vendors to try to add a bit of the Bohemian touch to the place. At the end of the day though, while shopping at AEON will probably enable you to get what you need, it won't necessarily provide what you want. So if you can't find a particular food item from home while wandering around the gourmet floor of AEON's Seibu department store then don't despair, the small Marco Polo imported foods store in Kosei-cho may well have it, or at least be prepared to order it for you. You've just hummed the tune of a song you desperately want to buy to a store clerk in Tower Records and got a blank face? Despair if you wish, but also try an independent such as Outside Records - for some people the music business isn't as much a business as a passion. You want to buy some clothes but would prefer not to look like something of a mass production line? There are alternatives.
There are two sections:
a) Restaurants covers the bars, restaurants,
live music venues etc - anything basically that involved food and beverage service.
b) Shops covers all other shops & stores
In both sections they are listed in alphabetical order. The majority of the establishments listed appear on the sections of Okazaki covered by the detailed maps (Maps A, B & C). None of the entries have been solicited or paid for. The establishments in this section have been selected in part because they are popular with visitors and foreign residents in Okazaki, and are convenient due to their geographic location. Okazaki also has many good restaurants, bars, shops etc that are located outside the central area of the city.
Note regarding Kosei-cho, the old downtown area: Although Kosei-cho has lost several of its larger stores to the areas further south (and a major hotel, and the General Post Office), many of the best bars and restaurants (both some of the old favorites and a number of new establishments) are located in or near Kosei-cho, along with quite a few good small retailers. Most of the shops are family run and still close around 7pm (compared with the extended hours offered by the stores in AEON), but the restaurants (and in particular the bars) tend to remain open until late. The small retail outlets (particularly clothing stores run by younger retailers) tend to offer a lineup a little more cutting edge than the chain stores dominating AEON and the southern area, so it's usually worth having a look.
