Okazaki City Guide
Search

Since the publication of the last edition of KEY, the on-going development of the massive AEON Shopping mall has had an enormous impact. People from surrounding cities are increasingly doing their shopping in Okazaki City, and it has also altered the locations where many of Okazaki's people eat, drink and shop. The major impact of the development can be seen in the old downtown area of Kosei-cho (Map A, north of the river), where there have been quite a few changes as the area adjusts and secures a different niche.

The gradual southward shift of the city's commerce has also to an extent affected the Meitetsu Higashi Okazaki station area.

Note regarding Kosei-cho, the old downtown area: Although Kosei-cho has lost several of its larger stores to the areas further south (and a major hotel, and the General Post Office), many of the best bars and restaurants (both some of the old favorites and a number of new establishments) are located in or near Kosei-cho, along with quite a few good small retailers. Most of the shops are family run and still close around 7pm (compared with the extended hours offered by the stores in AEON), but the restaurants (and in particular the bars) tend to remain open until late. The small retail outlets (particularly clothing stores run by younger retailers) tend to offer a lineup a little more cutting edge than the chain stores dominating AEON and the southern area, so it's usually worth having a look.

This section is listed in alphabetical order. The majority of the establishments listed appear on the sections of Okazaki covered by the detailed maps (Maps A, B & C). None of the entries have been solicited or paid for. The establishments in this section have been selected in part because they are popular with visitors and foreign residents in Okazaki, and are convenient due to their geographic location. Okazaki also has many good restaurants, bars, shops etc that are located outside the central area of the city.
