Yoga

Initially developed in India over 5000 year ago, Yoga is both a physical and a psychological discipline. Though many styles of yoga are practiced, the differences are usually small and deal with things such as alignment of the body, coordination of breath and movement, holding the postures, or the flow from one posture to another. However, despite any differences, all of the styles share a common lineage and ultimate goal of getting to know the Self.

What draws people to yoga is the many styles and versatility of those styles. Some use the repetition of sounds in a meditative state, others focus on action, and still others will emphasize the heart through devotion to the teacher. By allowing practitioners to focus on the physical, psychological, spiritual, or a combination of all three, yoga is able to spark an interest in many different kinds of people. Today, most yoga schools focus on the more practical benefits; the physical postures, breathing exercises, and meditation. Participating in yoga will improve physical fitness and mental clarity, help control stress, and lead to a greater self-understanding, and general well-being. However, as mentioned before, the ultimate goal is the spiritual journey of realizing the self.
